Great site! I am looking forward to going to the Southeastern at Troy, AL in April. It will be my first. Right now, I'm not into any particular personna. I've just got a CVA .50 cal.Hawken and I am learning to shoot it. I've got a lot to learn but it's fun. I got me a rifleman's frock, some canvas pants and knee high boots. I'm tanning a wildcat hide and hope to make a hat out of it. If anyone West central Alabama is into re-inactment please get in touch . I've met some Civil War folks out here but I'm not into that.

There are a couple of Mountain Man Rondy's that are in my neck of the woods,in april and june but I'de like to know if and where there are others that I could go to.Thanks...Rick

If anyone has a canvas wall tent or teepee for sale, preferrably under $500, please let me know. Thanks. I need some guidance. I am not really a pre 1840s enthusiast, but close. I am more into Texas Rangers which actually began about 1840 and I shoot cap and ball dated late 1840s and 1850s I believe. Are there any clubs that are more into this? If not, are there buckskinning clubs/rendevouz that are lenient as to what they allow and would welcome a Texas Ranger wannabe? The rendevouz seem interesting and would be fun for my 14-year old son and I. I am just not quite pre 1840s. Thanks Mark

I've returned to add that I would love to communicate with other Skinners. Any who would like to talk RONDY tails, history, "this real living," or such maybe we can help each other in some way. I have enjoyed this life style for 12 years {off & on} and have been starting over in Rondy activities in this area 1 year(long story). I can travel about 300 or so miles to go to a rondy. If I have notice of the specifics & time to get there. I've tried a lot of the "skills and crafts" and always want to learn more!! I'm a FREETRAPER from 1820-1835. You're right! There are more and more of us ... Buckskinning is the fastest growing family sport in the U.S. When I began ronnyvooing 20 years ago, there were very few ... for instance, the Big River Long Rifle rendezvous at Prairie du Chien, WI. When I started, only about 40/50 lodges set up ... last summer there were over 700! That should tell you something. Great site! Bookmarked it to spend some good times later.... GRIZ.

HI! I have just seen your site for the first time and like it very much. I'm new to computers and just learned to surf a couple days ago, so I was very pleased when I stumbled upon this "place." (Is this a website? Like I said, I'm new to this and don't know what dictates a website or not). I'm also new to buckskinning. I started to get involved in it a couple years ago and bought & made some equipment, but unfortunately I didn't meet all the nice people I always read about. In fact most of the people I met were rude and snobbish. I can understand wanting to be authentic and a bit exclusive, but what about the guy like me who's just getting started and looking for some friendly advice and assistance, not an attitude?!! I am convinced there are other groups out there who would welcome a newcomer who wants enjoy good fun and share common interests. How 'bout it? Are there any groups near Warrensburg, MO that would accept me? I'm new to the area and am still exploring all the sites around here. Any info is appreciated!

Greetings, I have been looking for a site like this. Glad I found this one. I have been skinning for about 11 years - geeking about 11 days. I am a member of NMLRA by default (only way to go to their rendezvous) and past member of a few local and state- wide reenactor groups. The "past" part is do to internal politics. I truely love the camp life. Live in an 18' tipi (Bill Walters) and dress as a renegade. Use to build guns but cant seem to find time to do it much any more. You know, the old bigger fish to fry thing. I am known as He's Red Bird or Redstone around camp. I live in central Michigan, work for G.M. as a die maker, married for 25 yrs., have 3 children, 1 grand baby, one son in college in Va. I would like to hear from others intrested in this hobby. Hello the Camp! Great job on your web site. My camp name is Yellowstone, not from the Great River, but from the ochre paint rock that I usually lug around and share with anyone that might use it. My family and I have been Buckskinning for about 9 years. My wife's name is Morning Star and our kids, Diana and Ben, have made many a track at Rendezvous. We live at Chico, Texas, in north central Texas and are fortunate enough to have several good small clubs in our area. Lately it seems that we've been overloaded with school stuff and haven't been out on the ground as much a we'd like. I've been to the last eight westerns and have developed the attitude that if it's on this earth and I haven't gone under , I will be there! It's been poor bull this winter but still haven,t given up on going to Montana this summer. We just had Webfire installed on my daughter's computer and this is the first time that we have had time to really look around. The first place I looked was Odin's Castle, where I eventually found your page. Odins castle is the web site of a close skinner friend, "No Squaw Gwynn". His web site has lots of other history contacts that I cant wait to check out when time permits. Keep up the good work, I love to see anything that helps Rendezvous, and as always would love to hear from a skinner. When we first started going to the western we tried to compete but have since spent most of our time just visiting, because there so many Interesting and talented people there. Well I'd better quit somewhere, I could Go for days!
Best Wishes and Hope We cross trials someday, Sincerely, Yellowstone

Hello, fellow skinners! Just found this page and am glad to see it. It's a great service so please keep up the good work.
I belong to the 'Bridger Mountain Men' black powder club. We have monthly meetings and monthly shoots. It's a small club but very active. I have only been in it since May, so I'm kind of a greenhorn. I have shot blackpowder for several years, and got a bighorn sheep (ewe tag) 2 yrs. ago and missed an elk with it last year. Want to get a deer with it this year. I tan hides (chemically) to make my mountain stuff.
Have been to Red Lodge rendezvous 3 times, as well as some road trips through western Wyoming and eastern Idaho to visit and photograph some historic sites. Lots of fun!

Seems I'm the only skinner in the whole state of Louisiana. As such I don't git to ronnyvu often. I was born Bob J. Rousse, but my skinnin' name is Savage Wolf (which is mostly a joke because anyone who knows me knows that I'm not one) and I prefer the "old days and ways".
I'd like to be in authentic longhunter or mountain man truck and I've been working slowly toward that goal since I saw a reenectment of the battle of Ft. Carillon (now called Ticonderoga), involving the "Ladies From Hell" and others, in the summer of '92.
My truck includes mocs, shirt, possibles bag, a Bowie knife, and "Thunder", my CVA .50 Hawken. I'd like to include a good hawk, a BP pistol (flintliock), and a Brown Bess. I do beadwork, barkwork, eat wild things, and I try to keep up my sign language skills (which is hard since I can't find a single person who speaks Plains Indian sign language).
If your interests are akin to mine, come and sit by my virtual campfire. We'll pass the pipe and spin some yarns.
Keep up the great (and rare) work. Keep your powder dry and your hair on.

This is the second page I've found with runnyvous info. I'm not a avid mountain woman, I've got too much going on in my life right now. I do, however, think I must've lived back then in a previous life. I really like the idea of self sufficiency. I have a nice 45 cal muzzleloader. Have yet to get to the range or out in the woods with it. I'm a crafty type person and am a fledling beader, I like all the aspects of "the old ways and days". I'll see what I can scrounge up as far as rendevous and powwow events up here in the Northeast. I don't know when I'll get back to you next, but I do love your page. We are spread all over and have a same minded heart. This page is very well organized and has much for everyone, especially contacts. Maybe others can use this as a guideline to start a similar page, yet connected, for each U.S. area and maybe outside the states also. It will take those special few to do this tho, and DEDICATION. In the meanwhile we all can enjoy each others company right here. Thank you for your dedication to reach out to us.

I recently returned to my native Florida after living in western Washington for many years. One of the things I miss the most is my involvment in a black powder club. I was really pleased to discover this page and read of others interest in the most satisfying hobby/sport I have ever been involved in.
The wife bought me a .54 cal T/C "Hawken" for a Christmas gift a few years ago. After a couple of months, I took it box and all to the monthly meeting of the 7 rivers Mountain Men in Grays Harbor county. They were eager to teach any flatlander how to load and shoot a black powder gun. They are a great group of people, women as well as men members. After the first visit, I was hooked and soon joined the club. The 7 Rivers rendezvous is considered one of the best in the NW. If things work out as planned, we will be there in August for at least part of the rondy.
With names and numbers from the Florida Frontiersmen, I hope to get involved with a club near Indian River County.

I just like blackpowder and buckskin. I am new at this very new. Just want to know more about my past and why do I feel such a kindered spirit to my past and the lore of blackpowder and buckskin. Why I wish for a simple log cabin and land to hunt on to provide all my basic needs. I have built a 50 cal. BP pistol. My job currently ties me down locally so I could not roam far to a rendezvous. Plan on the one in November. Got to find the right clothes do not have any period clothes at this time.

Hi Folks - Nice page, we have a rhondy coming up in July at a state park here in Oregon. This will be our third; we had about 3000 attend last year as it was open to the public. I'd love to send you a FAX of the flyer if you want...They have allowed live ammo in the park which we believe to be a first in the Northwest. We do a shotgun match, cartridge match, rifle trail, pistol trail, hawk and knife trail, council fire, Seneca run, potluck too. If you folks have time, join us.

Keep up the good work! I enjoy shooting black powder, and have been impressed with the mountain men I've encountered in the Seattle area. You guys are hard core! There is a lot of good literature on the fur trade and westward expansion. If you have a book list, that would be a good thing to add to the page. Mari Sandoz is the only author I can think of at the moment, but there are others I have read.

Linda has done a nice job on the site. I am in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, Member N.R.A., N.M.L.R.A. and the Willamette Long Rifles, the best shooting, reinacting club in the state. I know of no links or pages in this area and it is unlikely that any will be made as that would take literary skills beyond those apparently available up here. I would love to be proved wrong and perhaps someone will do the favor. It was nice to find your site...Pathfinder.

I'm introducing him to it slowly. I don't want him to get culture shock! So far he's leaning towards being a longhunter or voyager. I'm just so happy to find a site on the web concerning rendezvous. I'd like to hear from others, especially in the eastern U.S. Anybody I know out there?

Great idea -- we've been waiting for a long time for someone to start a web site about buckskinning. Our names are Hal Shaw and Dalene Shaw.
We live in Norcross, Georgia and we are the President and Secretary/Treasurer respectively of the Southern Shooting Heritage Association Muzzle Loader Club. We have over sixty members in our club. We are having our annual rendezvous along with another club, Trappers of the Hootch, at Fort Yargo State Park in Winder, Georgia, which is about 30 miles north of Atlanta. We'll US mail a flyer to you if you'll send us your mailing address. We rendezvous in a large wall tent. My husband's persona is an eastern longhunter and I am his Indian wife. We go to Friendship in June every year for the matches. He shoots and I trade. We also attend a lot of the local rendezvous in Georgia and sometimes we even venture into Alabama to attend the Whitewater Boys rendezvous.
I'll close for now, I could go on and on but I want to investigate your "site" some more. Shinin' times to you.

Howdy Skinners, I came back to say that we have had quite a few folks that have interest in coming to the new chat place. Hopefully we will be able to set up a discourse on a lot of subjects of interest to all of us. There probably will be some horse play of course, but I am in hopes of our having disscussions in various topics in some sort of structured manner as well. If all goes well I would like to set at least one day a month where we would all come to a chat using our personnas and speak only as we would have at a rendezvous. This might prove to be a lot of fun. I have participated in similar discourse on the Living History Forum in CompuServe.
For now we would like to gather on tuesdays to see how it goes. We would like to meet at about 6:00 pm Pacific time.
My son and I have accessed this chat various times to make sure that it works. It can be accessed from any server on the internet and through CompuServe Mosaic. When you get to the address,
, there is a program that is downloadable for chating, should you not have chat software. Once accessed you will find the various chats under channels, Us Smoky Smellin Fellers can be found under #Fur Trade.
Hope to See you all There!

Hello: I have been looking for a place that we might get a chat room started for us buck skinners on the internet. I have been to the Living history forum in compuserve, but that becomes very expensive if one doesn't have a local server.
Just Yesterday I found a new chat line that invited me to start a Buck skinners chat. We only need to find a time when we would like to meet there. If you or any other buck skinners you know might be interested have them Email me at shoshone@olympic.net so I can get back to them and we can figure a time that we might meet. The new chat place is at: chat.sprynet.com channel # fur traders.

We just reviewed your web page and thought you might be interested in knowing that there are others out here that are dedicated to living history. We are in the "Texas Army" reactivated from the original Texas Army of 1836 for the purpose of perpetuating the history of Texas during its war for independence from Mexico. We dress in period 1836 clothing which would consist of broadcloth to buckskins. Since there was no discript uniform of the day, pretty much a man wore what was on his back into battle. Much the same as in the American revolution. Our ranks consist of approximately 150 members, all commissioned Colonels by the governor of the state of Texas with only one general. The black powder interest of the members range from flintlock guns to 6-pounder artillery pieces. We are called to duty for any events within the state related to the early history (1820 - 1836).
If you have any interest or would like any information concerning our group, please e-mail us.

I liked exploring your links. I'm new to BP (About 3 years) and have made a few rifles from kits or from parts. Now I'm interested in building a BP-overunder (swivel-breech) rifle of the late 1700-early 1800's period. I understand Bridger owned such a rifle.I understand they were not too popular with oldtimers because of the inherent weakness of the swivel-breech. I can't find any other info on this type of gun, books, sketches of the locks and actions or photos. Can you help?

It is nice to see alittle bit of the last century creeping in to cyberspace! I have only been on-line for a short time now, but have found several things out on the web that have to do with buckskinning.
My wife, our little girl and I have been envolved in this hobby (or should I say life) for a few years now and must say that I have never had such a fun time! I am a paleontologist by profession, so I deal with the past everyday, but in my case, I get to creep forward in time when I go to a rondy.
My persona is that of a longhunter, more akin to the Mohalk, Delaware and Iroquois then to the white men. I live in Salem,OR so needless to say, I look alittle out of place at a western rondy. However, I was able to find some scant refference to longhunters in the Northwest during the late 1700's, ariving here on whaling vessels, and later as part of the Lewis & Clark Ex.
I think the dress is just more interesting as well as the time period of about 1780-1820.
It is very nice to have this opportunity to say hi to some of the buckskinners back east and wish you all a wonderful, and dry, rondy season!

My husband, George, and I are school teachers who enjoy rendezvous-ing as a newly acquired hobby. We are still learning about what is authentic and what is not. We haven't chosen personae yet because we just don't know enough. It seems that the earlier the time period that we choose, the greater versatility we will have in attending rendezvous. We have three schoolage children who attend with us.
George likes to shoot black powder and to attempt to throw a tomahawk. I enjoy sewing and cooking, and just plain camping out. We both enjoy the friendly atmosphere and cameraderie we have found at a rendezvous. My oldest daughter is learning to throw a tomahawk.
I want to learn more about early crafts, clothing, and cooking. I need someone who can answer my specific questions when it comes to crafting our clothes. I am also curious about finding something I can do or trade to fund this fascinating hobby. In addition,I want to learn some survival skills. Well, I guess you could say we are just hungry to learn everything!
Since we do teach school, we are somewhat limited on how much rendezvous-ing we can do. We are in south Georgia and precious little is close to us.
We would appreciate any correspondence about any aspect of pre-1840s buckskinning.

This is my first experience on the internet. My husband is the computer expert and I very seldom turn ours on. Needless to say I was very pleased to see some info on rendezvous which I was introduced to last year by a cousin who has been involved with them for some years. I went to see what he was always talking about; little did I realize that I would get bitten by the black powder bug. My husband doesn't share this interest with me, so I take my son and daughter to the local rendezvous and we love them. There is a local man here who does an amazing job on rifles and pistols. I have since had him to make my son and I both .50 calibur rifles. My daughter is 10 and she shoots a .22 single shot. This is turning out to be one of the most fascinating not to mention fun things I have ever done. We live in one of the most perfect places for this lifestyle. At times, it is most tempting to say goodbye to the fast paced lifestyle we seem to have aquired and make our wall tent home. Anyway, I am looking forward to keeping in touch and finding out any and all things you have to offer. We have several local rendezvous a year and as soon as I find out dates and locations for this year I will send them to you. It would be great to hear from women who love this era whose husbands don't. At times I feel like the lone ranger as here the case seem to be men who really get into it and most wives or girlfriends stay home.

Regards from the hinterlands of Idaho:
Hi, just wandering through and caught one of the few pages devoted to blackpowder and buckskinning. As a matter of fact, I found your page by running a number of search engines looking for links for my home page. I have a small link page www.uidaho.edu/~lnewbill/bp.html and will be expanding the blackpowder page when I have time (same subject as yours, i.e. circa 1800, but centered on the firearms). For some reason, the U of Idaho computer wouldn't download your page, so I had to switch to Prodigy to view it... has anyone else mentioned this?

I'm from a town in Kansas who has their own buckskinning club. We're small but active. The name of the club is The Smokey Hill Trading Company. The name was derived from the Smokey Hill River and the Flint Hills. My given name is Randy Holding; my club name is Shoots Too Soon. I am the Secundo for the club. My mailing address is P.O. As soon as I can get a home page set up I will get the information sent to you. We are not the only club in Kansas as buckskinning is thriving in here and in surrounding states. You are soooo right that there is not much on the internet related to Buckskinning. I have done some serious searches related to muzzle loading and black powder with little success. Thanks for having a home page related to Buckskinning!! Currently I am yet a `pilgrim,' and my time afield is spent under the stars in a `nylon tee-pee.' When I take to the woods with my possibles, shootin' pouch and the .45 flinter, I feel akin to all those before us who hunted, trapped, and lived in a time of great freedoms. Maybe somday, I will really live the part dressed proper from head to toe...
Thanks again!! Keep yer powder dry and the flint sharp!!
An Ohio longhunter at heart and in spirit...
